About alpacas
Alpacas are very beautiful and silent animals and the origin is South America. Alpacas belong to the camelid family, so the alpaca is one family and the more known llama is another family. A very long time it was forbidden to export alpacas from south america, but 1984 came the first alpacas to the USA and after that has the interest for them become enourmous. Today alpacas are spread all over the world.
Alpacas have been bred for thousands of years for their exclusive wool. The wool is about 30 percent warmer than merino wool, it's light, very soft and is not as sticky as sheep wool. No other animal can show a such big range of colours. There are 22 basic colours and complete about 250 different colours. Most breeders prefer animals with only one colour because it's easier then to sort the wool out. It's also free from lanolin so allergic people often can wear alpaca wool instead of sheep wool. They need to be sheared once a year, and a grown up animal can give about five kilos of wool. The baby wool from yearlings is the finest. There are two types of alpacas, Huacaya with fluffy fur and suri with long, lank wool. Huacaya is most common and about 90 percent of all alpacas are huacayas.

An alpaca foot The alpaca foot is very special. The foot is not a hoof, it has one soft foot, like a dog paw with two claws at front. This makes the alpaca the perfect lawnmower because this soft foot doesn't destroy the ground.
They also have their toilets which all the animals in the flock use. This makes it very easy to keep the pasture land clean, and to keep parasites away.

Alpacas have territories, so they are not disposed to escape from their homes. But - it's important to have good fences to keep other animals out because they are so valuable.

The females are ready for mating when they are about two years old. The males are finished later, about 3-4 years. They are pregnant 330-360 days, (11,5 months). She gives birth to one foal each time, and twin birth is very rare and if she do, the foals most likely won't survive. A new born baby alpaca weight is about 6-10 kilos. Two weeks after delivery the female is mated again.

The first questions we get about the alpacas is if they spit on us. The answers is no, with some exceptions! They can spit on each other when they are angry. A spit is a green vomit from the stomach and it smells awful.

This was a short summary about our animals. If you have some questions or want to know more about alpacas, please ask us!

Why Alpacas?
Many years ago me and my mother read a paper and we were both very surprised when we saw an article about alpacas. We found them very interesting and said "this would actually be something for us..!" In 2005 we read an article again in "Lantbruksmagasinet" about alpacas in south Sweden, an article with many beautiful pictures of alpacas and now we decided to see if there were any animals for sale.

Anna-Klara and Mohikanen We contacted a breeder and they had three wonderful huacaya girls for sale - Brownie, Amelia and Fortuna. They had a very nice father - MMR Gold Standard, champion in both Canada and USA. So, in spring 2006, our alpacas had finally arrived home! Of course our girls needed a fiancé, so we bought Mohikanen from another breeder. Mohikanen was a very friendly and nice boy, he was easy to catch and the perfect animal to show interested people the close look of an alpaca.
In september 2007 we got our first baby alpacas, Aurora and Amelia, both females.
